What the analyzer checks

Three ways a job description creates legal risk

Discriminatory language

Words like "young and energetic," "native English speaker" or "recent graduate" can read as code for age, national origin or other protected classes — even when nobody intended that.

Pay transparency gaps

A growing number of states and cities require salary ranges in postings. Missing, vague or wildly wide ranges can trigger penalties in places like New York City, California, Colorado and Washington.

ADA issues

Physical requirements ("must be able to lift 50 lbs") that aren't actually essential can screen out qualified candidates with disabilities and undermine your ADA defense if challenged.

Common questions

Job description compliance, answered

Which states require salary ranges in job postings?

As of 2026, pay transparency laws cover California, New York (state and New York City), Colorado, Washington, Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island, Nevada, Illinois and several other jurisdictions — with effective dates and thresholds varying. The analyzer flags when your posting would fall short of the strictest common requirements.

Can a job posting say "recent graduate"?

It's risky. The ADEA protects workers 40 and older, and phrases that imply a preference for younger candidates have supported age-discrimination claims. Neutral alternatives describe the skills needed rather than the person imagined.

What requirements can I list under the ADA?

Only "essential functions" — duties genuinely necessary to the role — belong in requirements. Anything else should be a preference, and reasonable accommodations may still apply. Essential-function language is also what protects an employer in an ADA dispute.
