Pay transparency

Many states, including CA, CO, NY, WA, and IL, require a good-faith pay range in job postings, so check your state's rules and include a range before posting.

See the rules for your state in HR laws by state.

Write a more inclusive posting

  • Replace 'must be able to stand for 8 hours' with the actual essential tasks and an accommodation statement
  • Check your state's rules on which certifications are actually required, and list others as preferred
  • Avoid 'young, energetic team' and describe the clinic pace and patient volume instead

Medical Assistant interview questions

Frequently asked questions

Do medical assistants need to be certified?

It depends on your state and the tasks involved; some states require certification for certain duties like injections or X-rays. Check your state's rules and list certification as required only where it is truly needed.

What is a good skills check for a medical assistant interview?

Ask the candidate to demonstrate taking a blood pressure or walk through rooming a patient. A short role play of a patient phone call also tests communication and HIPAA awareness.

What should a medical assistant job description say about physical demands?

Describe essential tasks specifically, such as assisting patients onto exam tables, and add that reasonable accommodations are available. Avoid listing physical requirements that are not truly essential.
